Ballarat to be well represented at National Masters Carnival
Ballarat will once
again be well represented at this year’s AFL Masters National Carnival in
Maroochydore Queensland from October 9th to the 15th
with 12 local players and 1 umpire attending the annual event.

the role from Noel Blake who led the Super Seniors to national title last
year in Canberra. Also playing in the over 50’s will be dual All Australian
and Gordon FC legend Andy Miller.
Ballarat Coach and
2010 All Australian and Vic Country Best and Fairest Tony Lovett heads the
list of local guys in the over 40s division with Shane Jewells and Phil
Cranage joining carnival debutant Darren Burns.
Bruce Wilson, Dean
Emmins and Les Furness make up the Ballarat contingent for the over 45s team
whilst Ben Stevens is the only Ballarat representative in the over 35s team.
Rob Walters is the
sole Ballarat player to line up for the Veterans in the over 55 age group in
what will be his 10th National carnival.
Ballarat umpire,
Wayne Scanlon will once again take charge in what will be his 6th
National carnival appearance.
The
Game of AFL Masters Australian Football provides the opportunity for players
30 years and over to enjoy the game of Aussie Rules Football in a safe,
supportive and fun environment.
After first commencing in 1980, the sport is governed by AFLM and its nine
member State Associations and is now played by over 119 teams throughout
Australia. (Formerly Masters Australian Football and Superules Australia
Inc)
Masters football has a national standardized set of modified rules designed
to reduce the risks of injury and has the benefit of being acknowledged and
supported by the AFL and the Australian Sports Commission.
The big annual event for AFLM is the National Carnival which is rotated
among various State venues.
The Ballarat AFL
Masters Football Club competes in the Vic Country division of AFL Masters
Football and plays throughout Victoria, every second weekend, mostly on
Sunday.
In Vic Country, AFL
Masters is for players over 30 years of age who enjoy their footy and want
to keep playing in a non-competitive environment.
It’s a great way to
keep fit with some fantastic social events not just for the players but also
for partners and families.
Training is held at
Whiteflat Oval every Wednesday at 5:30pm from February.

Slow starting Masters go down again!
The Ballarat AFL Masters Football Club gave the Wodonga based Murray
Masters team a 2 goal start in their round 7 clash at the Eastern Oval on
Saturday.
Ballarat were unable to capitalise on a number of forward entries in the
first quarter and failed to register a major, whilst
Murray
went with the strong breeze and scored 2 goals, however missing several
other opportunities.
The second and third quarters were evenly matched with both teams scoring
the same. But whilst Ballarat were able to score four goals with the wind,
the telling factor in the end was Murray’s ability to score
against the breeze.
When Ballarat ran the ball out of defence, they looked very good with the
small running midfield in Matt Rumler and Bill Dow moving the ball forward.
Matt Darcy was able to finish off a great effort playing in the centre to
also go forward and kick 3 goals.
Craig Dunstan provided Ballarat with a forward target and with others
around him also chipping in.
Playing in his 4th game with the Ballarat team, Chris Sizer was
able to put through a fantastic goal on the run.
Ballarat travel to Werribee next round, Sunday 17th July to
take on the Tigers at Chirnside Park.
With Werribee struggling for numbers at times throughout the year, the game
provides Ballarat with a great opportunity to notch up their second win for
the season.
Match details:
Ballarat: 0.1 4.3
5.5
8.7 55
Murray:
2.4 6.6

Best players: Dow, Darcy, Rumler, Dunstan, Ashmore

Ballarat
Masters finally on the board
The Ballarat AFL Masters Football Club registered their first win of the
season against Colac in Beeac on Sunday.
Ballarat managed to keep Colac scoreless in the 2nd quarter to set up the
41 point win.
Whilst the height of Colac caused some concern for Ballarat, Coach Tony
Lovett was more than pleased with the skill and pace of his small forwards
with Darren Burns, and Matty Rumler setting up early goals.
Ballarat was given first use of the ball out of the middle with Tony
Ashmore and Shane Jewells combining well together.
New recruit Vinnie Mallia looked a likely type winning the ball in the
middle and in defence. To top off a best on ground debut for Ballarat,
Mallia also went forward and kicked 2 goals.
In a welcome return to form Peter Widdowson also worked well at both ends
of the ground, running the ball out of defence and hitting his forward
targets.
In all the Ballarat team worked together as a team, using their ability
to run the ball and hit key forwards.
Whilst it was a great effort to set up the win, Ballarat coach Tony
Lovett said “we will have to work hard for all four quarters in our next
game.”
Ballarat will meet the Wellington Warriors in their round 6 clash in
Ballarat on Sunday 19th June.
Match details:
Ballarat: 11. 7. 73
Colac: 5. 2. 32
Best players: Mallia, Ashmore, Rumler, Widdowson, Dow, Jewells
Goals: Walters 2, Mallia 2, Rumler 2, Laube 1, Jewells 1, Scott 1, Booth
1, Burns 1
Ballarat v Gisborne – Sunday 15th
May 2011
Well the double header game at the Eastern Oval between
Ballarat and Gisborne was a great success off the field unfortunately on the
field Ballarat was out played by a fitter and classier teams.
In
the early game the over 47’s started the game well with Rob Walters and
Craig Dunstan in defense repelling the barrage from the visitors but when
going forward Ballarat found it hard to score. Leading by 2 points to Zero
just on Quarter time a Gisborne player was concussed in a heavy tackle
resulting in a long delay.
When play resumed Ballarat were on the
back foot again with Giborne scoring 2 goals to Ballarat’s nil.
The 3rd quarter started with some legends from the past helping out with
Robert Biggs, Errol Burns, Rod Carroll and Ian Mc Bain hoping to reek some
havoc in the forward line and with Chris Parker in the centre Ballarat was
relying on some experience to get them back in the game unfortunately the
minds were still willing but the bodies and the fitness were lacking.
Ballarat persevered with the same line up in the last quarter and
along with new recruits in Peter Constable and Steve Creelman adding some
spark in the forward line and breaking the lines Ballarat was able to score
its only 2 goals for the game.
Better players for Ballarat were
Craig Dunstan,Rob Walters Brian Lockyer,Bruce Wilson.
In the over
35’s game following Ballarat started the game off well matching their
opponents for most of the quarter with Darren Burns lively in the forward
line kicking an early goal and Billy Foster holding down the full back
position. Alan Wainwright and Charlie Veneziano were doing well on their
respective wings.
The rest on the game was a dire struggle for
the home side with Gisborne using the large open spaces of the Eastern Oval
to their advantage and running and delivering the ball with polish.
Once again Ballarat used their new recruits in Ross Foy, Shane
Henderson, Vaughen Richards to give them a taste of what Masters football is
about this affected the score board but not in Ballarat’s favor.
Better players for Ballarat were Billy Foster, Allan Wainwright,Charlie
Venezaiano and Rolly Malbourgh.
The big winner on the day was the
local Breast Cancer Support Group with all proceeds from the a luncheon
raffles and the auction of the 2 footballs used on the day raising over
$1500
Thanking you Greg Williams
Ballarat v Gisborne – Sunday 15th
May 2011
“Breast
Cancer Support Day”
Ballarat take on
powerhouse Gisborne in round 4 of the Victorian Country AFL Master
competition.
Ballarat will, for the
first time, field an over 47s team as well their regular over 35s at the
Eastern Oval on Sunday 15th May with the first game at 11:30am
and the second game starting at 1:30pm.
Ironically Ballarat
players who are over 47 have played with the Gisborne club since the
competitions inception in 2009. With the need for extra players, former
Ballarat and Central Highlands league players are planning on coming out of
retirement to help with numbers on the day.
The Ballarat team, who
fell agonisingly short against Sunbury in round 2 and went down to Echuca in
a big way in the previous round, will be looking for improvements against
the highly fancied and skilful Gisborne team.
Coach Tony Lovett is
expecting several key players to return, namely Shane Jewells and Darren
Burns but knows that it will be hard to cover the loss of Scott Middleton,
who broke his ankle last game, and key on baller Matt Darcy who is
recovering from a soft tissue injury.
Once again, the Club
is raising funds and awareness for breast cancer support in Ballarat through
various means including: entry by gold coin donation; raffles and auctions;
a ladies champagne luncheon; and contributions by all players involved.
The Ballarat Masters
football club has competed in the Masters Australian Football competition,
now affiliated with the AFL, for over 25 years and travels throughout
Victoria. Masters Football is for players over 35
years of age and in the Victorian Country division there are no ladders and
no finals. It is football for fun in a family friendly environment.

Echuca Match
30th April, 2011
An undermanned Ballarat AFL
Masters Football team lost to their Echuca rivals in round 3 of the
Victorian Country AFL Masters competition.
Travelling to Echuca without a number of key players, Ballarat was left to
rue missed opportunities to kick goals in the first half.
Eventually going down by 50
points, the Ballarat boys struggled to hit their forward targets.
Known for their ability to
run all day, the Echuca on-ballers continually
pushed into their forward line putting a lot of pressure on Trevor Booth,
Bill Foster and the Ballarat back line.
It may have been the long
journey to Echuca that sapped some of the energy from the Ballarat players,
but they eventually began to find form and took some control of the game in
the second half.
Ballarat coach, Tony Lovett
said “some poor decision making and simple skill errors caused us turn over
the ball. After working so hard to get possession, it was disappointing
that we then gave it up too easily.”
Ballarat will host Gisborne next round on Sunday 15th May at the
Eastern Oval, fielding both an over 35s team and an over 47s team. As such
many former Ballarat players are being asked back to help out the club as
well as some local former greats as well. Anyone interested in playing can
ring Tony Lovett 0402 655 983.
Ballarat - 4. 8. 32
Echuca – 12. 10. 82

Goals: Walters 1, Marlborough 1, Rumler

Best: Booth, Walters, Foster, Veneziano,

Echuca Practice Match
16th March, 2011
The Ballarat AFL Masters football club are heading to
Echuca for a practice match on Saturday 19th March. The Ballarat team will
play the Echuca Masters at the Echuca United ground at 3:00pm.
Ballarat enjoyed a competitive intra-club match at
Russell Square a fortnight ago which provided new recruits Brian Lockyer
and Peter Lovett with an opportunity for a run. Coach Tony Lovett was also
impressed with the return of on-baller Shane
Jewells, who along with Craig 'Mumbles' Dunstan will assist Lovett with
coaching duties this year.
Ballarat commence the 2011 Vic Country AFL Masters
season with a mini carnival at Geelong on Sunday 3rd April which will see
the team combine with Colac and Moorabool Valley
to take on Geelong and Gisborne in specific age groups of over 35's, over
40's and over 47's.
There is always room for more new players; training is
each Wednesday evening from 5:30pm at the Golden Point juniors ground at
White Flat.

Ballarat AFL Masters Training
recommences Wednesday 2nd February 2011
9rd February, 2011
The Ballarat AFL Masters Football Club will recommence
training at Whiteflat at 5:30pm, Wednesday 2nd
February 2011. Tony Lovett will continue in his role as coach following his
debut year on 2010.
The Club enjoyed good numbers throughout season 2010 and look
forward to continued growth in 2011. Of the 11 games played during the past
season, Ballarat managed 3 wins and some very narrow losses. But the
success of Masters Football isn’t measured on the scoreboard but in the
number of men over 35 still getting a kick out football.
New, past and current players are all invited to commence
training which is held every Wednesday from 5:30pm at the Whiteflat oval. The season commences on the 1 st Sunday of April and matches are played each
fortnight across country Victoria.

Ballarat AFL Masters Football Club new Coach 2010/11
3rd February, 2010
Tony Lovett has been appointed coach of the Ballarat AFL Masters Football Club
for season 2010 and 2011.
This will be Tony's first venture into senior
coaching as he takes over from Chris McAloon and
Shane Jewells.
Tony is excited about the challenge ahead as Ballarat plans to celebrate 30
years of Masters Football, or Super rules as it was originally known.
The first game of superules was played in
Ballarat in September 1980 between a Ballarat combine and team from the
Wimmera.
The Ballarat Masters play in the Vic Country division of the AFL Masters
competition. The Vic Country division boasts a membership of 15 teams that
includes Mooroobool Valley, Geelong, Werribee,
Bendigo, Castlemaine, Sunbury, Colac, Echuca, Kerang, Melton and Gisborne.
Gippsland has now expanded to include 2 sides and Wodonga comes into the

country and metropolitan clubs.

the season against Mooroobool Valley in Ballarat
on Sunday March 28.
Masters football is football for fun. Some rules have been modified to
ensure that games are played in a format that promotes a fair go and
inclusion of everyone.
The club is open to new players with the only requirement that they be 35 years
or older and that they love their football and enjoy a great family
friendly environment.

Ballarat Well Represented at 27th
National AFL Masters Football Carnival
20th October, 2009

A number of Ballarat players represented Victoria Country at the AFL Masters
Football Carnival held in Cairns recently.
The Ballarat AFL Masters Football Club provided 11 players as well as
umpire Wayne Scanlon. A number of players from the Meredith based Mooroobool Valley team also represented Vic Country.
Shane and Brendan Jewells and Greg 'Diesel' Williams had a successful
carnival in the over 35s team that claimed the division 2 title.
Noel Blake, Dean Emmins and Andy Miller were the
unlucky ones, winning all of their games in the over 45s only to loose the title on percentage to Vic Metro.
The over 40s team had the most Ballarat representatives with Bruce Wilson
and Darren Broadbent playing in their first carnivals joining Les Furness
and Tony Lovett. Greg "Diesel' Williams coached the team whose only
win came on the last day, defeating the very fancied North Queensland team,
playing on their home ground.
Rob Walters was a part of the over 50s team who were unsuccessful in
maintaining their form from past carnivals.
The Cairns carnival was the 27th National AFL Masters Carnival and was
attended by a record 46 teams across 5 age groups. Teams competed in age
groups of over 35, over 40, over 45 over 50 and over 55s. The 2010 Carnival
is scheduled to be held in Canberra.
